At the moment, “Winter is coming” is more than just a catchy pop-culture slogan: it’s the actual truth. While many people know Florida as a place that’s beautiful, sunny, and mild, what they don’t realize is that it can (and does) get cold during winter months. Though we likely won’t experience temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit at the absolute lowest, you need to be prepared for the temperature drop--as does your home!
Failing to prepare your home could lead to you paying the price—in more ways than one—so this holiday season the best gift you can give your home is to make sure it’s taken care of and ready to handle the cold months that lie ahead.
The first and most important you should do at the start of the cool winter season is make sure your heating system is equipped to run efficiently and effectively. We mainly use two types of heating in Southwest Florida: electric heat (which is for central systems), and heat pumps (otherwise known as reverse cooling).
It’s quite easy to understand how a heat pump works: if it’s cold outside, the heart pump will extract the heat from outside air and transfer it into your home using a fluid called refrigerant. It’s the same process vice versa. When its warm outside, the heat pump reverses its direction and acts as an air conditioner i.e. transferring the heat from your home and bringing in the cool air. And they do all of this while using very little energy. Heat pumps don’t burn fuel to create heat, which can save you a ton of money over the course of the winter season. Because we aren’t going to experience an extreme snow storm, using a heat pump will save you a lot of money, rather than using a furnace to help heat your home.
Electric heat is another wonderful way to save money and keep everyone in your home comfortable. Electric systems work similar to how a gas furnace does: they have a blower which draws air into the appliance, sends it through a “cooling” return and then pushes it to the heat exchange. From here, the cool air goes through the heating process and the final product, warm air, gets blown into your home through your air ducts system.
Making sure your heater is in top-shape with a maintenance service performed by a Naples heating services expert will help you ultimately save money and prevent your system from breaking down when you need it most.
